Yuschenko intends to feed the world with Ukrainian products
According to Interfax-Ukraine, Ukrainian President Viktor Yuschenko intends to negotiate with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to supply Ukrainian agricultural sector products to the world food market. The president said this during a meeting with FAO Director-General Jacques Diouf in New York on Wednesday, the Ukrainian presidential press service reported. The sides discussed the problems of overcoming the consequences of the world economic crisis, and the issue of food security in the world. During the meeting, the sides discussed the negative influence of climate change on the agricultural sector. Yuschenko said it was necessary to consolidate the efforts of the international community to combat the negative trends of these natural phenomena, especially via the Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Kyoto Protocol. In addition, the sides discussed the reform of the FAO, as well as further means of the cooperation between Ukraine and the organization, in particular, meetings at various levels in the near future, and projects of technical assistance from the FAO to Ukraine. According to the presidential press service, three technical assistance projects funded by the Technical Cooperation Fund were fulfilled in Ukraine in 2003-2007. Starting from 2005, the FAO has financed only projects of accelerated technical assistance in Ukraine as part of the Technical Cooperation program (TCP Facility).
